Why Does Roblox Keep Going Down?

Roblox outages are frequent and affect millions of young players. Here's why Roblox goes down so often and what to do about it.

Roblox is one of the most visited gaming platforms in the world, with over 70 million daily active users — the majority of them children and teenagers. When Roblox goes down, it generates more search traffic than almost any other service outage, because its users are very vocal about disruptions.

Why Roblox outages happen so often

Roblox runs an unusual infrastructure compared to most platforms. Each Roblox game is a user-created experience running on Roblox's servers, and the platform handles tens of thousands of simultaneous game servers at any moment. Coordinating this is technically complex.

Roblox also runs significant real-money commerce through Robux, its virtual currency. The combination of game hosting, marketplace transactions, social features, and user-generated content creates a lot of interdependent systems that can fail in cascading ways.

The largest Roblox outage occurred in October 2021, when the platform was down for approximately three days. This was caused by cascading failures in their internal Consul service discovery system that proved difficult to recover from at scale.

Common Roblox error messages

Error code 277 (disconnected from server) usually means the specific game server you were on crashed or was shut down. Try rejoining the game.

Error code 267 (kicked from game) means the game's anti-cheat or moderation system detected a violation — not an outage.

Error code 610 (failed to join, experience not available) can happen during server-side game updates or when a game is temporarily unavailable.

If the main Roblox website or app won't load at all, that is a full platform issue rather than a game-specific error.

Check WebsiteDown for a live server probe on roblox.com. Roblox also maintains a status page at status.roblox.com. Because Roblox's user base is so vocal, WebsiteDown's community reports section typically shows a real-time picture of how many players are reporting problems.

What to do during a Roblox outage

During genuine platform outages, nothing on the user end will fix the problem. Restarting the app, clearing cache, and reinstalling are worth trying only if you are getting errors that others are not reporting.

For parents: Roblox outages are a good opportunity for offline activities. For players: the Roblox DevForum and Roblox's Twitter account (@Roblox) are the best sources for official updates during major incidents.
