Steam is the world's largest PC gaming platform — over 120 million active users, with usage peaking sharply on weekends and during major sales. When Steam goes down, it takes game libraries, multiplayer sessions, and game downloads with it. Here is how to check whether Steam is down right now and what to do about it.
How to check if Steam is down
Enter store.steampowered.com at WebsiteDown.com for a live server check. Steam also maintains an official status page at store.steampowered.com/stats — though this is a traffic stats page, not a formal status dashboard.
Valve provides a more useful signal at SteamStat.us (unofficial but widely used) and the Steam community forums, where outage threads appear within minutes of a problem.
Steam's weekly maintenance window
Steam performs scheduled weekly maintenance every Tuesday, typically between 1 PM and 4 PM Pacific Time. During this window, the Steam store, community features, and some game servers may be unavailable or degraded.
This is predictable and announced — if Steam is slow or down on a Tuesday afternoon Pacific time, wait it out. It is almost always back within a few hours.
Types of Steam outages
Steam has several distinct systems that can fail independently. The Steam Store (buying games) can go down while the Steam client (launching games) still works. Steam community features (forums, profiles, trading) are on separate infrastructure from the game servers.
Steam game servers (for multiplayer) are often managed by game developers, not Valve — so a specific game's multiplayer being unavailable does not mean Steam itself is down.
The most common Steam failure mode is login server issues, where you can browse the store but cannot sign in.
What to do when Steam is down
If Steam is confirmed down globally: you can still launch games in offline mode. In the Steam client, go to Steam → Go Offline. This lets you play single-player games from your library without a server connection.
If you get a "Steam is temporarily unavailable" error: this is usually a login server issue. Wait 15–30 minutes and try again. Do not reinstall Steam — that will not help with a server-side issue.
If the Steam client crashes on launch: verify your game files (right-click game → Properties → Local Files → Verify integrity) and check if a Steam client update is pending.
